When are we supposed to fast the six days of Shawwal? Is it right after Eid? Do we have to fast them successively or can we fast them separately?
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
Fasting six days in Shawwal is likable according to most Muslim scholars for the following Hadith. Reported Muslim that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "whoever fasts Ramadhan and follows that by fasting six days of Shawwal, it is as if he had fasted an eternity." You can start from the second day after Eid or any other day as it is also lawful to you to fast them successively or separately.
Imam Ibn Qudama said: 'There is no difference between fasting these days in succession or fasting them separately, in the beginning of the month or in its last days as the Hadith is general and does not limit fasting these days within a given period of time during the month' .
It should be made clear that the first day of Shawwal i.e. the feast day should not be fasted as this is prohibited by Sharia.
Allah knows best.
