MILITARY officials in the Philippines say intense operations in the south have killed 54 Muslim militants from a largely unknown group that authorities say are connected with religious extremists from Indonesia.

The group is reportedly called the Maute group.

Regional military spokesman Maj. Filemon Tan said further operations against the group, which started on Thursday in the southern province of Lanao del Sur, are still underway.

Two soldiers died during the clashes, and nine others wounded, said Tan. The new information is based on intelligence reports received by the Filipino military and cannot be independently confirmed.
